///The moderators got a new button to play with at the beginning of last week. I've not used it yet!///

^That explains a lot. A re-think is in order.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that moderators are the worst people to judge whether or not a post is in violation of the Site Rules ...
Looks like one of them has and hasn't bothered to tell us. It would be helpful and polite to let us know.
Oh look, another thread headed for the bin.

You don't question the management, resistance is futile.
Ladybirder, most of them want to remain anonymous so won't expose their identity by declaring a thread closed. I feel that if they were named, as they are on other sites, some of them might not be quite so trigger happy. Currently they zap with impunity.

trigger happy mod...
Naomi I suppose I thought pressing the button Chris showed us would keep them anonymous as just a "moderator has closed this thread" message or summat like:-)
I don't think that some Mods bother solely about the infringement of Site Rules, it would seem that they only have to hold a different opinion to the ordinary ABers for them to close a post or a thread.
If a thread doesn't have an answer box, then it's been closed by either the editorial team or a moderator, probably because of either spam or being derailed into a personal spat. If it helps, a member of the editorial team will put a note on each thread when it has been closed - but either way, if the box isn't there, it's because the thread is closed, not because it's broken or something.

Also, mods aren't out to get anyone in particular, and if they were, they wouldn't be mods. Everyone is just doing their best, and threads being closed or deleted, or members being banned, is not up for debate. That's the way it has always been, and the way it will continue to be.
