Summer time (now) is the best time to trim laurel, when fresh young growth will not be affected by frosts.
If you can do it with secateurs it will look much neater, rather than cutting large leaves in half with shears or a hedge trimmer, Good Luck. T bird+
AS Tbird says if you can do it with secataurs,if you cut into a leaf it will die,and they look so beautiful if cut taking your time, Good luck, Ray

Thanks to you both -- I usually cut it in August but the hedge is so big I have no option but to use a hedgetrimmer. I bought the one with the longest cutting bar that I could get because of the depth of the hedge and I keep it quite high ( about ten feet ). The garden is huge and is completely surrounded by the hedge so there is no way I could do it with secateurs. Thanks again.
