Got letter saying I owe tax ,I was in employment on paye then retired ,figures suggesting I owe the tax .I will pay it .Tried to contact them ,nightmare .Their site says I can post .So I will go ahead and do that . There was supposed to be a number on letter unique to me but was not on it . is there a helpline just to clear this up . thanks

No phone number on the letter?
Phone no here, make sure you have your NI number ready.

I would not just post off the cash unless I had the personal tax reference number that you say is not on the letter.
The letter will have a 3 digit code that tells you which local tax office deals with your case.
Use this to find your local office and phone them tomorrow morning

The local office will be able to deal more quickly with your account.
If you can't find a reference number on the letter it's worth sending a copy of the letter back to them with your query. If you don't have a copier just take a photo of the letter and print that off.

The only`phone number I have is 03002003310, which is self assessment.
The letter I had also stated I owe £4.20 and to log on to the website and click "view statements", but when I did, there was nothing to click on. Tried their "search" box and it took me to a page which had nothing to do with statements.

I`ve had so much trouble with the GOV.UK sites with various ID numbers and passwords that I`m considering using (after training) using carrier pigeons in future, to save on the cost of postage. Afer all, it does not cost the staff of HMRC to write to me, they just send it to the post room and somebody franks it eventually.

If you can get on to www.gov.uk then go to the very foot of the page under "contact" you might be very lucky to send an email complaining about their site.

When I tried to sort it on phone .I hung on for 12 minutes ,they had suggested I do a survey at the end of call .At 12 minutes the phone went dead so the pleasant voice of a lady suggested I take survey .On a count of up to nine how did you rate three different aspects of the call . 0/9 0/9 0/9 . maybe they don't want the money after all . LoL

There is no longer individual tax offices - ring the helpline or do the online chat that is available.

and you get the link. Mine for example is Peterborough.
The link doesn't work for me either. Anyway, from their website, "Arranging an HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) appointment online

HMRC has introduced a new service asking customers who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech impairment, to complete an online form to request a face to face appointment.
Customers who are not deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech impairment should not complete the online form but follow the link below to contact the HMRC helpline." Sounds like you can't just rock up to the office or ask for an appointment unless you're in one of those categories.
Yes and I would work your request in Belfast! The local address is a postal address no one will be there to help it has all been centralised. So no Eddie it is you who are ill informed. Back to the op!! Ring the central helpline for help or use the online chat feature
