What is it - it cannot just be to notify the local junkies

Are you sure they're not gunfire? A lot of about round here!
No fireworks round here! And like corylus says it must be gunfire.
Not noticed any in the daytime other than early evening, but plenty going off at night. (Bradford)

danny - I am in Bradford City Centre and it was here we heard it. I have heard them in the early hours in BD2 and LS28
I'm in Horton Bank Top so wouldn't hear the ones in the city centre.I think some people just let them off on any occasion, birthdays etc.
It'll be an Asian wedding celebration. Hope you were spared the powerful sports cars screaming up and down the main roads.
The National Fireworks Championship are taking place as I type this...about 1.5 miles away as the crow flies. Neither I nor my dog are happy...
There is no law about the time of year fireworks can be set off.
We tend to only think of them as November 5th, but other cultures use them for any sort of celebration at any time of year. There are many shops that sell fireworks 52 weeks a year.

Melv - Don't think we aren't spared the hired sports cars zooming around because we are.
Mind you - travelling from Pudsey to Calverley yesterday via Woodhall Rd (you will know where I mean danny) at 7.30pm is bad enough and no hire powered cars involved just idiot drivers. I don't know why all drivers don't have on board cameras for their own safety and security.
Regularly hear them in Burnley, day or night. Seems that folk will set them off to celebrate anything; birthdays, wedding anniversaries, divorces, baby's first normal poo, etc, etc, etc.
