I sometimes put a dish of left over meat out for visiting cats. I did this tonight. I usually know when a cat has arrived as the patio light comes on.
But no light so far tonight. I had a quick look out the door and there to my horror were about five enormous slugs. They were about five inches long and all over the dish. I chickened out and came in quick! OH wouldn't do anything either.
I had noticed a lot of slug trails on the patio lately but didn't connect it.
I think I'm going to have to put the dish on a chair or will the slugs climb up that too?

I can't kill them. I can't kill anything. I rescue spiders from the bath. Woodlice I move with a piece of card. Wasps and bees I help on their way with a a fly shatter. I mean I lift them onto it and move them outside. So I have a problem.
What about a cheaper version of this?

I leave the leftovers out for others too Caran, and indeed have been hi-jacked by slugs. I just use a trowel or stick to pick them up and deposit elsewhere!

I've just had a look with a torch, there are about eight of the little b.ggers there. I was going to throw the dish's contents over the wall but the torch died on me, so I can't judge what I am touching. Eeeuuk!
Put the meat in a dish and then place on a larger plate. Sprinkle a ring of salt and the slugs will slither a mile from it as the salt kills them.
We have a tub of salt especially for them.
I wouldnt recommend anyone putting cooked meat in the garden
attracts rats
( sorry to be a party pooper)

cassa333, I think that is the answer. Will do that.
Had this happen to me when I've put food out for the hedgehog. It's the slime they leave behind on the dish. Yuk! Have now bought dried hedgehog food, the slugs appear not to like that, but the fox does!
Sometimes I really wish I had a garden...right now I'm glad I'm a couple of story's off the ground.

Slugs and snails have a purpose, they feed hedgehogs.
which are becoming scarce due to all these hot summers we have been having year after year. Hedgehogs are coming into rescue centres badly malnourished.
I agree Georgiesmum.
