I'm trying to figure out some exam results.Maths has NEVER been my strong point, so if someone could tell me the answers to the following (or the method of workingo out for the sticklers of 'learning by doing') I'd be much obliged.

Two assessments for each: 30% and 70%.
1) 30% = 68%
Final Mark = 72%

2) 30% = 60%
Final Mark = 68%

It's the 70% assessment marks I can't figure out!

Let's take the first case. If I understand you fully, then the 68% will contribute 30% towards the final mark, while the 72% will contribute 70% towards the final mark, yes?

So:

68 x 30/100 = 20.4%

and

72 x 70/100 = 50.4%

Add these two results together = 70.8%%.

I'll let you work the second one.
Sorry about the duplicated percent in the answer!

Sorry, it wasn't clear, may fault.

I had 2 seperate modules. In both, I had to do 2 assessments, one worth 30% of the total mark for the module, one worth 70%.

Module one: My overall result was 72. On the 30% element, I got 68%.
Module two: Overall result was 68. On the 30% element, I got 60%.

It's the marks for the 70% componants I can't fathom.

If this was 50/50 I'd be fine...
Okay Woola

So, taking the first example. If your overall score was 72, and since we know by my working that the 30% element contributed 20.4 to this 72, then the 70% element contributed 51.6 (by simple subtraction). So, working backwards:

? x 70/100 = 51.6

Rearrange to solve for ?:

? = 51.6 x 100/70

? = 73.7% (to 1d.p.)

So, for the first module, you scored 73.7% on that part that contributed 70% to your final mark.

You can do similar working for the second module.

So...just to clarify...

The 70% mark for the second example would be 71.4?

I feel I should point out these are marks for an English degree, therefore I'm entitled to be entirely clueless about numbers!
Woola
Yep, that agrees with my working.

Ah, but isn't there a maths entry requirement to get on your degree course? Or have they done away with such things since my time at uni? :)

It's being able to pick and choose your A Levels :) Actually I really do have a problem with maths and numbers, just liek a lot of people can't read or spell. I make up for it by being an English genius (!)

Anyway, now that I've figured all that out, I know I got 69% for this year, 66% overall. A nice healthy 2:1, hooray me!

Sorry to be pedantic woola, but an english genius should be able to spell sepArate!

Genius with a (!) i.e, I'm not.

Do hope you feel better now that you've pointed that out to me anyway.

Thanks for your help shammydodger!
