Have any of you ever regretted the name you gave your child? Or hated your own name? Just wondering after talking to a friend who's a midwife about all the new babies she sees with "unusual" or fashonable names who are probably going to hate their parents for it!

Not personally, but I was talking to a chap the other night who was taking the michael out of the stage names of strippers. One he quoted from experience was the name of a French city, I forget which. It occurred to me a little later his daughter is called Paris..... I can only the guess the mother was very insistent.

Personally, we went for traditional, short and sweet. Amy. I hope she likes it.
I have always hated my name, my parents made it up.
My children all have 'sensible' names, and middle names for in case they didn't like what we chose.
I still cringe when I hear people giving their kids perculiar and/or made up names.
I'm like puzzled, I've had to put up with a very unusual name all my life, with no middle name, so I too gave my children ordinary names, with middle names. I'm sick of having to spell my name out to people all the time so can't stand it when I see perfectly ordinary names spelt stupidly eg Amiii, Lili, Cait, . I think these parents think they are being 'clever' but all I see is a lifetime of annoyance for these kids.
I wanted to call my son "Random" because it is the name of a character in a favourite book of mine lol but as I love my son, I restrained myself, I could imagine the stuff he would have to put up with.

I hate my christian name, middle name and surname and have done all my life. I remember being in tears when my brother told me only my surname would change when I got married - I wanted it all to go!

You would also not believe the various spelling combinations I've had over the years - even when I'm standing right there and spelling my name out to them! Interestingly, I'm always drawn towards biblical/traditional names for any children I may have so I suppose it goes round in a cycle - weird/normal/weird/normal

Sounds a bit like my partner wanted to call our son Danone said like dan own over my dead body poor litle thing can you imagine it

I have an unusual name-when I was young I didn't like to meet new people because I would have to tell them - people say "whats it short for " or "thats strange" I chose Ellie and Kane for my kids.

I must admit I love having a different name now - you don't get mixed up with anyone - people only need to hear my first name!

I have a slightly unusual first name, and as a very shy child hated having to spell it out for adults. I longed to be one of those people who just said their name and the teacher would just write it down, no questions asked.

My housemate is not known by her first name, which is 'Helen'. Reason being, she's from Manchester, and in the first week of her life, her Mum got fed up with her being called 'our 'Elen''. Henceforth, she has always been known by her middle name of 'Miriam'.

I hate my middle name, so much so that I considered removing it by deed poll! I won't tell you what it is but it's hard to pronounce and I can't bear it.

Spudqueen - I have to answer your post about weird spellings. My daughter's name is Caitlin (spelt the traditional way - not Kaitlyn or Kaitlin) and we shorten it to Cait (spelt like a short version of her name) because it would look odd spelt the normal way. I never thought that made me one of those people who saddles their child with a dodgy name though! Her first name and both middle names are in the top 50 most popular so I'd guess they're all 'normal'.
Sorry for double posting but I have to add that I never could stand my surname either and have never been so happy as when I got married and now have an ordinary surname that people can spell!
