I have a 1.9L diesel Renault Scenic. I love it but I have difficulty keeping it at 30mph while in 4th gear - it just seems to want to take off. I can change down to third but in prolonged city driving, it's not very economical - but then neither is 2 x 60 speeding fines ! Any suggestions other than downsizing ?

Try a higher gear than leaving it in fourth.

If I put it into 5th, it would be like driving a bucking bronco !

The gearing in a scenic is fairly standard and diesels have excellent low rev torque - must be more to do with your driving style than the type of vehicle. Ease up on the leadfoot and you will be fine.

Thanks,Coobeastie - I realise where you're coming from now. Tried 5th today and revs went down to 1000 - more economical but does it do the engine any good?
Low revs will do no harm as long as you are not 'labouring' the engine.
