The comedian Charlie Drake did a sketch where he played all the parts of the orchestra members including the conductor many years ago. I believe this was shown on one of the many 50 greatest type of programmes a few years back.

It's probably wrong, but no harm in clutching at straws.

In the 1940s there was a big band leader named Kay Kyser. He conducted the "Kollege of Musical Knowledge" orchestra, usually wearing a mortarboard and academic robes and using wildly exaggerated gestures. My dad loved his movies (included "Stagedoor Canteen" and "Swing Fever") - which were made during the '40s and played on TV well into the '60s.

Could he be your mystery fellow? If not, well . . . never mind . . .
