A hairdo (big spend day); a pair of shoes (since I was already in Scarborough and needed some); a litre of milk; sm. pkt. of plain flour; 2 bottles of diet tonic water; a newspaper and a tomato (to top tonight's Macaroni Cheese).
All that to top a macaroni cheese, jourdain - that's impressive. The shoes, did they add the North Sea sole you were seeking (I almost typed seaking!)
Just read the rest of the post answers. You will find England, as she used to be, Sqad, still functioning under a sheen of modernity here in E. Riding of Yorkshire.
Yes England as she used to be - when you could wave at strangers in the street :-)
As it happens I'd swap with sqad tomorrow.

You want to be a grumpy old man?
I do wave at strangers in the street and they wave back, as do the tractor drivers etc.. If you give-way to another car, it is 99% certain that they will give you a wave and smile. The kids say 'Hello', Mr. J2 was really tickled, when he arrived here, to have a 12-yr-old ask 'Are you reet?'. He can't believe how comfortable and 'community' it feels here, which is great.

I forgot to add my most important purchase today - a reduced 'Frozen' colour-change facecloth for a stocking-filler for my 5-yr-old granddaughter Phoebe (a huge 'Frozen' fan). It has a Summer scene printed on it, but in warm water snowflakes and a magic castle appear! Cost me £1.55 and I'll bet it is her favourite present and they'll never get her out of the bath!
I was being facetious with the Johnny Foreigner comment. I'm well aware of, and embrace certain multicultural aspects of our national identity. Though not all cultural imports are beneficial to the indigenous population.
Jourdain2, my sister and I used to wave to people when we were in the back of the car going anywhere. We were thrilled when people waved back, so I always wave to kids in cars now.
