Just need a bit of a moan really...

A woman I work with insists on having the air conditioning on full blast all day (it's seriously reaching arctic temperatures in here) yet she comes to work wearing long sleeved wooly jumpers and has so far had around 8-10 cups of tea to heat her up even more!

How can she not realise why she's so hot all the time?!!!!!!!!!!!

Add to that the fact that she's not very nice or approachable either and uses every conversation she starts to put you down or patronise you.

Why is there always one in every company?!!!!!!!

Thanks for listening! x

You need to get your work colleagues on board for this one. She needs it pointing out that there are more than her work here and she needs to go with the majority. If you're on your own with this one then you may have problems but if your workmates are behind you then she doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Despite being the sort of person who prefers it cold, I think Dollie has a point. The woman shouldn't allow her preference to dominate the office. Does everyone else agree with you Peghead?

That's aside from her tendency to put people down -again, is she doing this to everyone? Whether or not she is, the fact she's doing it is unacceptable in a workplace and it needs to be tackled.

On a side-issue, as someone who feels the heat keenly I find that the people who feel cold usually win. In offices I've worked in, a welcome blast of cold air from the a/c on a blistering day is almost always met with dismay by certain people who make dramatic shivering motions and hug themselves while taking pigeon steps over to the a/c to switch it off. I almost came to blows with a former colleague who objected to me opening a window in July, saying it made her cold and she would "become ill if the window is open" (all said in an irritatingly mournful voice). It seems it's okay to feel uncomfortably hot, but never acceptable to feel uncomfortably cold.

Anyway, apologies Peghead don't misinterpret that little rant, I think you are right to be annoyed by this person but consult with your colleagues and get it sorted - good luck.

That sounds like heaven right now as we don't have any a/c in our office and having the doors open and the fans on doesn't really seem to make much difference!!

Back to the question but can she not compromise and have it on during part of the day? Or at least turn it down once the room temperature is more comfortable?

The cups of tea should in theory cool her down. You see the hot liquid hits the stomach, raises temperature there, so the body tries to cool itselt -in theory.

Maybe though, the poor woman has some kind of skin complaint so has to wear long sleeves, which makes her hot and added to the itching makes her snappy. Or better yet, tell yourself its probably something that doesn't require sympathy like, she got absolutely plastered the other night and woke up with an enormous 'I love my mum' tattoo, which she is now deeply ashamed of and wants to conceal but which goes well with the elvis tattoed on her bum.

Thank you Hermit, that made me laugh out loud

Thanks everyone, most people in the office do feel the same. The problem is that she's new and although several of us have dropped hints she seems to think she's above the rest of us because she's slightly older. We've tried turning it down slightly while she's on one of her tea runs, but she always ends up turning back up!

Think I've found a solution thought - just had a chat with one of the other girls and she's found a spare desk fan to give her as a compromise, then we can leave the air con on but at a comfortable temperature.

Thanks again for letting me moan!

Ps. Hermit - thanks for the tea thoery, might have to test it out once the office warms up a bit! :-D
