No mobile signal

When you are in an area that has no mobile signal how can you still contact the emergency services? doesn't any call still need a sattelite signal?

No signal from your particular service provider, doesn't necessarily mean that another provider doesn't cover where you are. On screen messages can say, "emergency calls only", where another network would let you dial 112 or 999 etc, or it may say "no service", which means exactly that.
And sattelites don't come into it!
