Perhaps to stop the spldier from downloading the photo from the web page and using it to further his lies.
No idea, I wonder if it was something that Danny Hutchinson did when he uploaded it. Looking at the image, it looks like the square is as degraded as rest of the picture - meaning that it's no the DM which added it.
It won't be that bhg, as it is the soldier who posted it in the first place, meaning it's likely that it was him who added the red square.
Ah, I was wondering what spiders had to do with it.
Another of this saddos mendatious ploys. It's Chris Evans really with his bins hidden!
typo mendacious

Why do you think it would be the soldier that added the red square, surely if he is the sort of person that he appears to make himself out to be, he would take great pride in a photo that displayed him next to the Prince?
It should be Hutchison who is left red-faced....
The Daily Mail would pixelate a photo, or at least make a better job of disguising the Prince. So it is more likely the red square was added by the person who originally uploaded the photo.
That's how the picture appears on the Walter Mitty Hunters Club page.
The images is taken from his Facebook profile.
So either he added the red blob before setting the picture as his FB profile, pic., or WMHC added it when they put it on their page.
Someone on the Walter Mitty Hunters Club website posted the photo with Prince Harry and a red square. It is a joke. They don't think Hutchison is genuinely remoseful, and do not accept his apology. So the red square, with the caption "Hutchison updates his profile picture" means that he is not trying very hard to correct his fatasy story.

There may be an intermediary, as TheChair suggests.

People are very often confused about reusing images, privacy, etc - so sometimes do weird things like that.
Perhaps the Mitty club did it because although they left Harry in the pic to illustrate how far this scumbag was taking his fantasy ... they didn't want anyone to see Harry's expression, which I assume will have been one of admiration.
