Is anyone else as horrified about this story as I am. It's so tragic. I watch BBC News24 all day at work and it's main story is this. It's just so horrible and I feel so terribly sorry for the mother. I hope they find who she is soon and give her some help.

why do you feel sorry for the mother exactly do you think she has been killed also (haven't see the news just read the above story)?

if the mother is still alive she must have some involvement in the death of her baby (even if that is not reporting the murderer to the police)
I'd imagine that she feels sorry for the mother because she would have to have been in some sort of emotional/ mental turmoil to be party to something like that. The whole thing is a tragedy and shouldn't happen in this day and age.Poor little mite.
i guess the mother must have been in some need of help, and i hope they offer that to her in jail (if she was involved or withheld evidence / information) but at the moment all my sympathy is with the dead child
I have to be honest, when they said 'mothers involvement' my initial thought was Hang the b*tch!!!There thats was my thoughts,,!!
If you've read any of my posts or answers, you'll know that i'm a supporter of Capital Punishment, but in this case, I think the mother needs help, and quickly.

The way I see it is that a new-born baby girl took her first breath and was apparently battered about the head, placed in a plastic bag and thrown into a river.

I won't deny that for many reasons this mother must be found.

Lonnie - surely if a murder has been committed capital punishment is a just sentence? Are we going to make allowances for emotional issues?
RIP baby Lily. ^8^
Poor wee soul! Can't begin to imagine what kind of circumstances surround her death but do hope that the mother is found quickly...who knows for sure what has happened / is happening to her!!

Poor little girl. Sleep peacefully sweetheart.

Maybe the mother was only young herself, feeling frightened and confused, and maybe the young father also, but to actually injure a baby is cruel beyond desperation. So terribly terribly sad.
Just to add to my previous answer, in Germany there is a "letterbox" where unwanted babies are handed in to a waiting nun, no one sees the other. Cold, clinical but much much better for all concerned if these "letterboxes" were more available these days.
this is a terribly sad tragic case, sorry but I only feel compassion for the baby who was not even given a chance. This country has possibly one of the best infrastructures of support for either unwanted babies or women seeking help. Totally needless.

I'm a receptionist in a great company that has TV screens in the reception!!!!! It has to be on News24 (can't have E4 or anything cool like that) so we watch it all day! I don't mean, glued to the screen obviously, but it's in the background and when news flashes come on we watch to see what has happened. Got to say though, it's the most depressing thing to have to watch all day!
