Hi, my cat is currently unable to meow - she tries but only a slight whisp comes out.  Can cats lose their voices like humans?

Well Jem1, we have had a few cats and it is strange that some of them are almost completely non-vocal. They still open and close their mouths, but nothing comes out. Our present feline friend is just the opposite. Early morning calls and all !!

One theory, it is to do with the age the kitten is taken away from its mother. The earlier it is taken away the less likely it is to mew

I guess this answer is it not much use, as it sounds like from your question, this is a recent change in behaviour.
If your cat is still eating and drinking okay, I wouldn't worry, else it looks like a trip to the vets.

Yes they can lose their voices.  It has happened to my cats occasionally.  As long as she is well, happy and eating I would leave it for a few days as, in my experience, their voices come back.

However, if it continued then  I completely agree with Tabby that a trip to the vet will be necessary

Yes jem1,my cat Yasmin tends to end up with a croak,if he complains too loud and too long, about some perceived misdameanour on my part!
One of my cats also lost her voice for almost a week last year too, but it came back. If she seems OK in every other way I wouldn't worry too much. If you become concerned, then of course go to the vet. Good luck.
Did you ever find out what was going on? I'm having the same exact problem with my cat...I was thinking allergies???
