What compound word is derived from a late middle English term and indicates exasperation. It was used in literature by Elizabeth Gaskell and Virginia Woolf. One of them used a hyphen, the other did not. (Local quiz question - help would be appreciated!)

Bugbear or Headache are the only ones that spring to mind - no idea whether/how Gaskell/Woolf used them though.
Maybe heartburning but can't substantiate this.
