do think Amanda should have gone to Primark and got brand new shirts/blouses, skirts/trousers for the new term. Hand me downs not today's standard. I am also sure the kids themselves would have loved brand new uniform.

I wonder how much they earn from the TV? It looked like Raven was off back to uni in a new Audi Q5!
I'm not sure there is a Primark in the Yorkshire Dales JJ.
Never mind today's standard. When you have children they get an older siblings cast offs, that's how it works. I don't know anyone who could afford new school uniform for their children every year. The oldest/older child gets new, or maybe second hand if the school has a rail.
Also, in today's throwaway society reusing is the new thing

well where I live now and used to live - all the kids got new uniforms even just for the first term

shoota - that was a sarcastic remark re Primark. Asda (George) Sainsburys (Tu) just as cheap.
My response was tongue-in-cheek JJ - The Dales are much gentrified these days.
I think Yorkshire people have far too much common sense to throw away perfectly servicable clothes (and this from a Lancastrian).
My daughter had had to fork out £100 for PE kit alone for her daughter. Because the school will only allow certain items of clothing. Ridiculous!
Maybe if they didn't have so many kids they would be able to afford new clothes. Why would anyone need that many kids anyway?
Lankeela, 9 very well adjusted kids they are and learning skills for the future of farming
For goodness sake of course they can afford new clothes they are 'loaded'. Its all for the cameras. Amanda has no need to use cast-offs and would give them to the school uniform club for less priveledged children if the cameras were not there. It makes for good viewing for townies, but knowing their real way of life, its quite funny people think this is 'ordinary' life in the Dales. I don't know any farmers who like this programme, but then again I bet quite a few Vets used to cringe at some of the antics on All Creatures Great and Small.

Kate Humbles programme 'escape to the farm' is much more truthfull -I enjoy this programme and she manages to do all her farming in sensible clothing, not a mini skirt in sight ;-)
LOL ^^^^ From Mrs sqad.
why would anyone NOT re-use clothes? my daughter had 1 set of new badged stuff when she started school (for photos and other occasions when it was expedient to look more presentable etc) an dthe rest came from the 2nd hand uniform shop the school ran.. Why would you pay £15 for a school cardigan that just gets beaten up/lost when you could pay £1 for a pre-used one
Bednobs you can't have it both ways -on the one hand you state school clothes just get 'beat up' then on the other hand you are suggesting these 'beaten up' clothes are handed down to siblings -which is it? The only time I've used hand me downs with my children were the very small baby grows that were on maybe a month before they grew out -even then they all got new vests.
I agree, bednobs, however when I turned up to try and take advantage of such bargains locally some jobsworth called the police.
they do get beat up, but mainly lost. My daughter losst 2 cardigans in 1 week. I was pretty glad they were only £2 rather than £30.
also, it probably depends on whether they come home ad get changed, or if they wear the clothes in the evening too
Typical of our throwaway society to criticise the reuse perfectly good clothes that the older children have grown out of.

Instead it’s acceptable to buy cheap new stuff manufactured in the Far East in shocking conditions!

I’m off to the charity shop for a good rummage.
£30 for a school cardigan? Jeez you can get them in Asda for £4.......
£30 for 2 school cardigans (with the school crest on) this is why 2nd had is preferable!
