My son's passport expires on June 21st - Does this mean we are unable to allow him to travel on March 23rd for a week to Tunisia??

most countries insist on 6 months free time left on a passport so better get a new one
You can "carry over" up to 9 months unused time onto a new passport, ie if you renew 9 months before your old passport runs out, your new passport will be valid for 10years and 9 months.  Therefore you may as well renew now and then there's no problem.
There is still plenty of time (so long as you act quickly) to still get a new passport in time

Getting back into the UK is not a problem, but Tunisia may insist on having 6 months left on the passport.

I would call the airline, they will know, the staff have to be trained on passports requirements for the countries they travel to.
