At the moment, while the dollar is week, will I get a better rate for my sterling if I take sterling to the US and buy dollars out there?

I dont know whether you will get a better exchange rate in the US compared with the UK (I suspect not) but bear in mind that whereas you could change sterling into dollars in virtually any UK town, you will only find exchange services in major US tourist areas/resorts.

A few years back, I took sterling to the US (thinking I would get a better rate), once I entered Hicksville, no bank would accept my Sterling, unless I had an account with them.

At the same time as posting this I actually emailed the hotel I am staying at in Vegas - their current rate was $1.95 to the , whereas in the UK I can get $1.91 at the post office - so, in this circumstance, it seems advantageous to take sterling with me... also, as it's vegas, if I keep my money in sterling, and have a big win, I don't lose out as I won't have to convert money back into sterling!
