Do you have the account with HSBC where you psy s little extra each month and get free travel insurance? Its worth looking into upgrade to if you dont. They do not charge for cash withdrawals if you have this account. They do if you have their standard account.

When checking my French account at an ATM in england it gives me my balance in euros so I should think your english account should give your balance in pounds if you are in America.
A lot of US ATMs charge 2.50 dollars for UK cards, they will advise of charges before finally committing to the transaction. Most main UK bank cards are accepted.
HSBC DO charge for withdrawals even with the 'free' withdrawals account - 2.75%. Their other account(s) charge a fee as well.

They say it's not an actual charge but their choice of exchange rate.

They are very easy to use. If it asks you deposit or checking account just choose the latter.
Sorry Dzug but to pinpoint this issue

HSBC do not charge per ATM withdrawal. The higher levy charge is significant of most banks.

"Fee free global ATM withdrawals We will not charge you a transaction fee for using your debit card in shops, stores, or at cash machines overseas. Just look out for the Maestro or Cirrus symbol and use your card just as you would in the UK. Some Cirrus/Maestro members may apply a direct charge for withdrawals from their cash machines and this will be advised on screen at the time of withdrawal"

almcd007 - that's exactly what I was trying to say. They charge 2.75%*, whilst trying to give the impression they don't.

*Along with most banks, it's true.

*Nationwide don't.

Sorry not to have been clearer - but HSBC aren't either.
