my passport expires in september 2006 but can i still travel now for 1 week to cyprus?

If it's a British passport then it just needs to be valid. For (some) other nationalities 3 months vaidity is required.

Alternatively, you can however apply for a passport up to 9 months early and keep the unused time, ie your new passport would run out in September 2016. There are express renewals which could get it renewed quickly depending upon when you want to travel.
