From one good Crete site: - Toilets. Should you need a toilet in a restaurant or a cafe, then look for the WC sign. Inside the toilet you will notice a waste basket or bin. This is where you should throw the toilet paper because the delicate Greek waste pipes will get blocked if you throw the toilet paper in the toilet bowl. at: http://www.explorecrete.com/various/crete-guide.htm

Hotels may take the paper but basically, no, used goes in the basket by the WC, which is very common in Greece

And look out for the squatting toilets by the beaches - no hand holds, open concrete pits - and no paper either, more than likely...

Brilliant place for a holiday and really worth exploring - get out of the main resorts, and enjoy the break. Some beaches with absolutely no-one else on them, fresh food, friendly peeps everywhere - just a good place to be.

I used to go Greece a lot for my hols and I basically ignored all those signs; call me a repressed western European. But don't use much paper or the pipes, which are narrow in Greece, will get blocked.
