Has anyone been to Crete who can recommend somewhere fairly lively for a couple in their mid-40's? Don't want it full of 20yr olds but would like a few tavernas or bars to visit as don't want to be going to bed early every night!

I am considering Elounda at the moment, can anyone recommend anywhere else?

Agios Nikolas is fab.....well I've not been for a few years but it used to be :-). Its not far from Elounda and has got a lovely bottomless lake surrounded by bars and restaurants. People there are lovely too. I have been 5 or 6 times as I loved it
Try Chania...a beautiful town with just about everything.

It has an airport but limited departure points from UK.

Thanks, I'll have a look at both of those. I have been looking at various places but am getting overwhelmed by all the choice so thought I would ask for recommendations!
My son (middle-aged!) lived in Kato Stalos for several years, short 'bus ride from Chania, and much cheaper. Lots of first-class bars and restaurants, good walking, nice beaches, no midnight ravers. Friendly people too.
If you want to go farther afield to a less developed part of Crete check out Plakias in the south west

lovely and enormous beach along the bay which is very quiet, plenty of tavernas, a few bars/discos
