Im sure it does. Remember 9/11 happened after the hijacking of aircraft on internal flights.

Yes that i know but that was a long time ago.....
Actually, at most airports now, the wait time is minimal. The system has greatly improved... whereas one use to have to check in as much as two hours before the flight it can now be safely done at about an hour for most flights within the States. Some airports can still be a problem... notably La Guardia, Boston and occasionally O'Hare, but even those only encounter itermittent problems...
O' Hare can really be a problem at peak time. It can take 45 minutes to line up and go through security in addition to lining up to get tickets and your baggage checked in.
I agree about Chicago O'Hare - I was there last January and it took at least 45 minutes to get through security, though if you ever have to go there go to the security right at the far end, it is apparently quicker than the others - that's the one I went to and that still took 45 minutes! Have also been to Louisville, Orlando and Newark airports in the last year, and there were virtually no queues there.

Newark didn't seem too bad last year - there was absolute chaos coming off the flight from England and coming through immigration there, but once we had cleared that and found where to put our bags for the internal flight to Las Vegas we seemed to go through security fairly quickly, and it was busy!

Something that I will bear in mind for another time though is to remove all jewellery, put my change in my hand luggage and not wear trousers that require a belt, as we had to take these off to go through the metal detector and then wait for them to come through the x-ray machine. My husband also had to take off his leather shoes off to go through the machine, although they didn't seem bothered about my trainers.

Another tip is to listen carefully and train your ear to yhe American accent. I spent 6 months in Antigua last year and as a result turned from a pinky white colour to that of a well smoked kipper. We returned to England via JFK and at security I had to step into cubicle to be patted down by a security lady. As she straightened up she looked me in the eye and said "You've got a nice tum". I screeched "Get away from me you beast, we need a supervisor in here !!!". When it was all sorted out it turned out that the security lady had said "You've got a nice tan !!!".
