is it possible to just turn up at an airport and get a real cheap flight somewhere? MY mum used to talk about bargain bucket flights? Is this still going or is it cheaper to find something last minute over the internet?

Im thinking of going to australia in the new year, but i need super-cheap tickets!

Last minute these days equals super expensive - at one time airlines did sell off last minute seats cheaply but have realised they can get more money by selling them at top rate even if they leave them empty a lot of the time.

Would you rather (if an airline) sell ten tickets at 10 or one at 200?

It will make very little difference whether you call the airline, go to a travel agent or book over the internet - you'll get roughly the same deal depending on how much the agent is prepared to shave off their probably slim commission.

They do still do those last minute thingies, but only on chartered flights. My mates in Tenerife quite often come home that way (and presumably go back the same way too). Doubt they do chartered flights to Oz, though not sure.
