Tegel is the old west airport, while schoenefeld was for the east. As such Tegel is the more central but bioth are well served by the over/underground rail system. You can buy travel passes for all the transport covering 2.3 or 7 days (IIRC). I seem to recall from Schoenefeld to centre is about 40 minutes, Tegel about 15
I've only used Schönefeld Airport but it's an absolute delight to use. You're off the plane and outside the terminal building in almost no time at all and then it's just a short stroll (along a covered walkway) to the train station. (Going the other way, there are hardly any queues to check in. The airport is small enough to be remain very user-friendly but big enough to have any facilities you might need).

The trains are frequent and can get you almost anywhere in Berlin fairly quickly.
I second what Chris says Schoenefeld, straight off the plane onto the train, lovely airport to use. Tegel is fine too, but for some reason I'm fonder of Schoenefeld ( if one can be 'fond' of an airport) and usually use that if visiting relatives.
This may be a bit late for you - but if you're flying into Tegel, there's a great bus service from outside the airport right into the city centre .....
