I have only bought free-range chicken for many years, but who knows if even that isn't beset with fraud.

Yesterday's Fake Britain highlighted a company that was buying in cheap bacon from Europe and repackaging it as British, free range, dry cured - all of it untrue.
You never know
obviously the internal audits are failing and not going up to the right regulatory body.

What continues to amaze me is why it always seems to take a campaigning media to expose things like this.

You can understand why the company does it....its sheer greed for profits.

But why can't our Food Inspectors make sure that its them that exposes scandals like this first ?

That's not what you say when it's the Daily Mail who are campaigning, as they usually do.

AOG.........complete nonsense. I am on record for congratulating the DM on its outstanding campaign over the Stephen Lawrence affair.

But when have the DM exposed serious fraudulent problems in the food business and if they have, show me where I have spoken against the DM ?
It really isn't that difficult to establish a field to fork pathway without spending a fortune.

For the vast majority of fresh food I buy I know exactly where it has come from

Eccles....unfortunately, for the vast amount of shoppers in Britain, they have very little choice but to accept, believe and trust what the supermarkets tell them.

In this case, the official Food Inspectors, and the supermarkets themselves don't appear to be doing their jobs, not only properly, but at all.

///But why can't our Food Inspectors make sure that its them that exposes scandals like this first ?///

Could it be because our Food Inspectors usually make official visits and everyone knows who and where they are and is on best behavior, while an undercover reporter is just one of the boys and normal practices are resumed.
Question Author
Baldric....I am not sure under what auspices the Food Inspectors go about their jobs, but if they can't do spot checks, and/or employ undercover operatives, then perhaps its about time that they do.
// But why can't our Food Inspectors make sure that its them that exposes scandals like this first ? //

I'm sure they do, but we probably don't hear about those cases as much.
Question Author
Ludwig....I am sure that if the Inspectors had uncovered wide-spread fraud and illegal food hygiene law transgressions like this, we would have heard of it.....our free Press would have made sure we did.

Thank heavens for that.
must remember to tell the son, who is an internal food auditor, he's doing his job wrong cos no-one has gone in undercover yet.
As there is always a shortfall in Inspectors to cover all avenues, then investigate journalism can play a very good role in uncovering such frauds.

There's no need to play one off against the other.
I'm surprised that anybody's surprised at the news.
Question Author
Alba...I am not criticising your son, but I am criticising the system.

The reality is that this dreadful situation would still be going on, if it were not for the Guardian/ITV News investigation.

What is shown is exactly what happened. The firm involved, 2 Sisters Food Group, a major supplier of fresh chicken to supermarkets, has been caught red-handed, not by the normal process, but by an undercover operation.

This seems to have been successful, and all I am saying is that perhaps the Food Inspectors should consider upping their game in the future.
Question Author
Mamy...I am not playing them off against each other...merely asking why this fraudulent and possibly dangerous practise wasn't unearthed by the people that are appointed to protect us.
