I have only bought free-range chicken for many years, but who knows if even that isn't beset with fraud.

Mikey, I know you're not criticising him :-)

There are far too many 'sharp' practices out there and they most certainly need to be investigated and questioned.
oh, and prosecuted where necessary.
if every dodgy/ suspect source of food were to be exposed and acted on..we'd die of starvation..

Then we are agreed on that then Alba !

My suspicions here is that ::

1....there are too few Inspectors
2...there are too few inspections
3....That when Inspectors are present, they may be bullied and intimidated in the course of their duties.

In that case, then it would seem that undercover operations should start to be part of the Food Inspectors normal duties.

I'd guess inspectors try to keep things low key and avoid mass hysteria that has the potential to kill many an innocent business !

Minty...innocent...just like 2 Sisters ?
You are right there. murray

When 'media' carry out investigations the sole object is to sell copy and make money so of course if they get the results they were hoping for it is very well publicised.

Yes there is a shortage of inspectors, I said that earlier.

You did indeed Mamy !

HC...I am not sure I agree with you but in this case, thank goodness that this undercover operation happened.

Does anyone remember Winterbourne View ?

I don't recall any criticism of the Media when they exposed the disgraceful events there.
// But why can't our Food Inspectors make sure that its them that exposes scandals like this first ? //

Maybe some of them are as greedy as the chicken company's bosses, and do a deal!
can't tar every food prep place with the same brush Mikey.. remember the harm Edwina C caused with eggs.... most situations will be dealt with without a song and dance and knee jerk reaction by the public... my ex was involved in a fair good few cases that would have had a similar reaction if it had become public knowledge..
Edwina was right. The public had a right not to be kept in the dark. Had the egg industry had any intent to sort the issue out they would have done so ages beforehand. But it wasn't profitable nor in their interest to do so, so no incentive.

Marks & Spencer, Aldi, Lidl and The Co-op have stopped taking chickens from the site while investigations continue.
