Often hear on here that prison is a holiday camp etc. (along with all the myths portrayed by the media that prisoners have access to games, sky tv, etc)

Just wondered how many ABers would like to test that theory?

If you were convicted of an offence and were likely to spend time at her Maj's pleasure, just how do you think you would spend your time?
Gurantee its not how you would imagine.

After spending a month of so in a Psychiatric hospital I know that I wouldn't cope very well in prison.

Freedom is a good thing to have - even the freedom to wash, eat or visit the toilet when you want is not fully appreciated until you don't have this freedom.

Not that I've done anything to warrant it, but going to prison is my biggest fear.
I could further my education by reading. Learn a skill or trade. An acquaintance of mine teaches bricklaying at Highdown close by me.
My daughter in law works in the medical wing at the same prison.
She has invited my wife and I to come and dine at the Cordon Bleau restaurant there.
The public can use this facility. Run by a cordon bleau chef who teaches the inmates how to prepare and cook the food. I enjoy cooking. I would try to join the project. I would try to keep my self fitter. I really should spend more time in the gym but have too much time on my hands on the outside world even as a retiree.
I wouldn't expect a holiday camp if I was a banged up criminal. I saw today that the inmates may be banned from smoking inside the nick.
The staff who smoke have been banned for smoking inside the nick for years.
Who are the ones being punished ? :-)

I haven't got the idea that it's an easy ride in there - I imagine if I had committed a crime I would just make the best of it.

I know someone inside at the moment for a very long time, I don't envy them their lack of freedom but then price has to be paid.
As I understand it offenders are able to study, many of them leaving prison in possession of a degree. That's how I'd spend my time. Can't be bad.
Getting in would be the hard part.
I've read plenty of prison books to know it's not the holiday camp some think it is.

Noel "Razor" Smith wrote a very interesting autobiography. 'A Few Kind Words and A Loaded Gun....'

My boss (cousin) got 6 months in a cat B prison. Even in cat B the isolation killed his spirit.

He was locked up 23 hours a day. He did have a TV but one word out of place an the TV was taken away.
I knew someone who had to serve her sentence in Holloway Prison. Theory and practice can be two very different things as any educated person might realise. I think some answers here will show either naivety or plain arrogance. Anyone's passage through their sentence is not dependent upon their behaviour alone.
On the plus side he now likes Loose Women and This Morning :-)
I'm sure it's not a holiday camp. but 3 meals . free gas/electric, no mortgage/rent. no council tax or house insurance, sounds rather nice :))
Teacher ex-friend of mine went to prison, Nailit......I'm told he spent his time in charge of the library......could that be so?

I would knit, sew and probably do an A-level or two.....x
And get e-mails?^^
Probably easier than here, Psyb.....☺
What next, are you going to block book an entire cell wing?
If that's for me, Mamya....I could yarn bomb an entire cell block I suppose..x
I could not stand the lack of silence - it really would push me over the edge
hc, that would get to me too. Hate noise.
