I currently live in Watford and am moving to a new job in New Cross, London. Anyone know a good place to live around there? Is it best to live outside and commute in?

i used to live directly above new cross road. new cross is a bit traffic heavy, so the air quality is not too good. I would recommend you live a bit outside the area - camberwell and Blackheath are nice. so are parts of grenwich and brockley. a bit farther off is crystal palace and forest hill, which are more residentially - but better than new cross!

I'll probably get slaughtered by the good burghers of New Cross for this but my view is that if you're used to living in Watford, don't, under any circumstances,  go and live in New Cross. I would even advise against working there, but that's probably not a choice you have.

I'd go a litlle farther out to live if I were you. Blackheath is the only area mentioned by metagirl which I consider reasonable, but it's mostly very expensive.

I would move somewhere in the quadrant between Croydon and Sevenoaks. If you choose somewhere near a railway station there are decent connections to New Cross and you can enjoy a bit of the country at weekends.

New Cross is somewhere to pass through rather than stop at.  Some parts of nearby Peckham are now nicer than NC, but my choice would be Blackheath if you can afford it. Great 'village' atmosphere, good pubs and restaurants, good rail connection and cleaner air. Good luck.

My husband used to live off Turnham Road, Brockley, nr New Cross (left there in '65). It was ok in the 60's, but apparently isn't a very desirable place to live these days.

Like the others, he's just informed me that although Blackheath is further to travel, it might be a better option for you. Good luck Juan.
