I am planning to travel to New Zealand in July 2014 and return in early January 2015. As nobody seems to be offering dates on line beyond November 2014, can I book an open ended return and confirm return travel dates when the schedules are published? If I can do this, which airlines can it be done with, and can it be done on line?

I think 12 months is the extent of most tickets. Might be better to buy a one way you would have to look at one way as opposed to a return. It used tobe cheaper to buy return tickets but now they seem to price each leg separately
You could contact a few airlines. I know Finnair fly to New Zealand. I flew with them to Hong Kong and was very impressed.
I'd do it through someone like Travelbag or Trailfinders, who tend to get the cheapest fares.

I don't know the answer to your question but they will. I think it's as Brinjal says, you can't book more than a year ahead.

You could look into just a oneway ticket, with a view to buying return ticket over there. Very often it's cheaper that way than a return ticket.
