Do you mean Whitwell Hill between York and Malton on the A64 as there is no massive hill into Scarborough?
Question Author
Think so. Sorry. We went a few years ago and it was horrible. Just wondered if we could avoid it
O.K. I asked because the big hill you see leaving Scarborough is Staxton Hill over the Wolds to Driffield which people often use as a route to York if the main road A 64 is busy. That is a bit of a climb and I have been stuck in heavy snow on it.

To avoid the hill at Whitwell you have to get off the A64 via a back road between Stamford Bridge and Malton which can be confusing unless your navigator can read a map.

I suggest you use the A64 all the way though as the road over Whitwell was brought up to date a few years back and should be fine in an average car as the gradient was improve.
Whitwell is easy. You didn't go via Thirsk on the A170, over Sutton Bank to Scarborough last time did you? That route is not for the inexperienced or nervous.
I never knew people could be scared of roads. Tarmacadamphobia?
I couldn't quite understand why Whitwell Hill was thought so bad Graham W.
