Hi,
My fiance and I are planning on driving the Route 66 for our honeymoon next May. We were planning on hiring a vintage cadillac (or similar) to do the drive from Chicago to Los Angeles (or even the other way round) but so far have either struggled to find a car, or the one we did find was $300 a day.

Can anyone recommend a car hire company or sole trader which will allow us to drive from A to B, but not back again, which won't break the bank? Are there any other cars that people can suggest which will allow us to get into the spirit of the trip, but which might be easier to hire?

Thanks :-)

I don't know but at a guess I'd say your best chance of a one-way rental is with a bigger company. You could hire a Winnebago and live in it, but I suppose staying in motels is part of the fun (I staayed in some of them earlier this year, but they're no more romantic than motels anywehre else).

I don't think you will find getting a one-way rate is difficult from the main providers. I've certainly done it with Alamo 4 years ago, taking a car from Seattle to Colorado. It's a one-off fixed fee, from memory of about $500.
That is in addition to the normal rental fee.
Consider a Hummer or even a current Cadillac, Mustang or big Buick.

OK not vintage, but a totally different driving experience from home and appropriate for the country (and fuel prices)
I didn't get to stay in this one but it looks intriguing

(The classic cars outside belong to the motel)
Not an answer, but certainly wish to say have a great gtime. What a wonderful way to get to know each other more, driving and talking and having fun. Me and my wife did a similiar thing.

Laying on the beach in the sun for 2 weeks asleep catching cancer isn't my way of getting to know my life partner more.
