Went from Newcastle earlier this year for 278 all in, via LHR on BA at good times.Probably would have been about the same from Glasgow/Edingurgh.

You were robbed :)

Just typed in a random week in January with RyanAir and their fares range from 69p (at 7am, though) to 15 (for an evening flight) from London Stansted to Glasgow. EasyJet will do similar flights and also to Edinburgh Prestwick. Where would you be flying from?

Oh hello, read the title of the question, Indie. SimonC's flight is suddenly not so expensive..!

Apologies for my incompetence, let's try again. I had a look on Expedia and they have flights starting at around 230 and with a connection in Holland.

look out for the BA january sale. they generally sell seats to NYC from LHR at 199. you are limited to the times of the year you can fly, but not to an overly restrictive extent. of course you then need an internal flight but as Indie points out, these are very cheap indeed from Glasgow or Edinburgh. Even Aberdeen you can get to LHR for 60 return or so

Icelandair (from Glasgow) are generally very competitive at any time of year - down to under 200 at cheapest times. You fly via Iceland leaving mid morning and on the way out they give you a couple of hours at a spa for free, but remember to have your swimming gear in your hand luggage. Returning you have a short stop to change flights and arrive about an hour earlier than you left. Many find LHR unattractive as a changing point.
