I'm hoping to do some travelling over the winter (December-February) but wanted to get involved with some volunteer work in a country like Thailand or Tibet.

I cant afford to pay an organisation for a placement so does anyone have any ideas on where's best to go and what to do when I'm there cos I'm a bit clueless!! lol

Cheers

Mrste - few of the resonsible organisations have a 'turn up and work' policy.

See http://www.crossculturalsolutions.org/About_us/default.asp for one company that organises volunteer placements. Lots of info on overseas projects too. Also: http://www.gvi.co.uk/pages/projects.asp as another organisation.

There are lots of bodies that will take volunteers, some dressed up as working holidays to assist local projects and give you a holiday at the same time, but others, like some of the animal projects, expect you to be there as full time staff.

Suggest look at some of the info on similar sites and then maybe contact to say you will be in an area and do they want further 'hands'.

One or two bodies will train you first before you go - try http://www.4lifethailand.org/volunteering.html or troll through the info at: http://www.volunteerabroad.com/Thailand.cfm

hope tgis is of help and best wishes if you can get a suitable place.

nickmo given some good advice there. don't think you'll be able to find too much volunteer work in tibet - it's hard enough just getting the permits to get about the place.. if you want something really informal, quite a few of the little schools in nepal and east india (ie bihar) are really happy to have people come in and help in any way they can, for any length of time... but probs better to make some enquiries before you go..
