Which Hard Drive?

In the process of adding an additional internal hard drive (old one full up with itunes and photos.)What hard drive should I choose? ie is bigger better (looking at 1TB) or does the bigger size cause any problems eg slower etc. Any recommendations on makes models appreciated.

Bigger is better. It may take a little longer to do the initial partitioning and formatting, but after that it will be fine...

But also as you are only using it for storage and not the system by the sounds then speed is not the primary requirement anyhow, but if it was then spindle speed makes the difference rather than size. as it is any old 7200RPM drive will be plenty fast enough.

You should also consider a way of backing up all your data too, relying on one hard drive will leave you regretting it eventually.

There are two types of connnector for a hard drive - newer PCs will have a SATA connector for hard disks, older PCs will have an IDE connector (also known as PATA).

You need to find out what connector your PC has before buying a new internal hard disk.

If your hard disk is full up of photos have you considered backing them up to CD or DVD or external hard drive and then removing them from your PC?

If you dont back them up then having important files like photos JUST on your PC is risky as a hard disk can crash, Windows can crash, a PC or laptop can be stolen and so on. If you dont have things backed up then you lose them forever.

In fact if you are going to start playing around with the hard disks in your PC it is even more important to back them up in case anything goes wrong.
