How can I save my favourites to a file on the Desktop and then to a memory stick in case of computer breakdown. Thanks for any help.

I don't think you can - I am sure this question's been asked before. I could be wrong!
If by Favourites, you mean Bookmarks (I could be way off here), you can (in Firefox) export your bookmarks as a html file and simply email it to yourself as a means of storage.
Copy the URLs (addresses) to a Word page & transfer to stick. Better to email the Word page to yourself so it can be lost.
Go to Start > Search and look for 'Favorites'. (NB: Remember the American spelling!)
When you find the folder, right-click on it and select 'Copy'.

Insert a memory stick and double-click on its icon to open a window displaying its contents. Right-click within that window and select 'Paste'.

Job done.
