Start by clicking the speaker icon on your system tray and see if the "mute" box is ticked.

i did have it there
but it has disappeared
thank you
Ok..next step:
Start--->Settings--->Control Panel--->"Sounds And Audio Devices" (now check that "Place Volume Icon In The Taskbar" is ticked).
Though tbh, it looks as if your audio driver needs to be re-installed.

if i have to reinstall the drive r can u tell me how i can do it please
As AP indicates then ou probably need to install the driver (or the windows audio service has gone and shut itself down again!)

Post the make and model of the laptop and we'll get you a link for the drivers.

Have you tried the 'Help' section on the control panel. It's very comprehensive on my Toshiba.

had a go at it
no luck
You've stated that you've downloaded the driver but have you actually installed it?

You need to double-click on the downloaded file to unzip it. That will produce a folder called 'Sound Driver'. You then need to double-click on that icon to open the folder. Lastly you need to double-click on the 'Setup' icon to install the driver. (It might also be necessary to restart your laptop before Windows will recognise that the driver is there).

i dont think i downloaded the driver
cannot find it
could you please tell me how to do it again please
that would be brill
thanks for your info and time
Click on one of the links in ChuckFicken's post, above. (i.e. choose the right one depending upon whether you're using Windows XP or Vista).

You should see a box asking you whether you want to open the file or to save it. Select 'Save' and click 'OK'. You'll then see a box asking you where you want to save the file to. That can be to anywhere you like but, for simplicity, I suggest putting it on your desktop. (Click the little downward-pointing arrow at the right of the box which is labelled 'Save in'. Click on 'Desktop', then on 'Save').

Then close (or minimise) your browser window, so that you can now see your desktop. You should see a new icon with a zip down the middle of it. From there, follow the instructions in my previous post. (After you've installed the driver you can delete the icon from your desktop).

And thank you for taking the time to respond. (It can be really frustrating when we don't get to find out whether what we've typed made any sense at all!).

I'm glad that you fixed the problem.
