No. This means that your laptop *does* include Microsoft Word, but it hasn't been activated.

Firstly, go back to the people from whom you purchased the laptop and ask them to give you the activation code for the copy of Microsoft Word that is installed on it. If they won't do that, ask them why the laptop you bought from them came with an unlicensed copy of Microsoft Word.

If you get no joy from that avenue, and you want to continue to use Microsoft Word, then yes you will need to buy a legal copy and use the activation code that comes with that.
If you check it out, you'll probably find that a 30-day trial version of Office was pre-installed on your machine- this is fairly common practice.
If you don't want to pay for it - get Open Office instead. http://www.openoffice.org/
Check the documentation that came with the laptop as there may be a code for "Microsoft Office" in there.

But it will almost certainly be a TRIAL version (so many days - maybe 30 or 60).

Almost NO computers come with a full license of Microsoft Office pre installed.
As has been said, Open Office is free (legally) and perfectly adequate for most home users.

However if you MUST have Word for some reason (work or college) then there is the Home and Student version for about £60 that can be installed on 3 computers.

Thank you so much for all your replies. I dont necessarily need Word. I only want it for writing the odd letter and thats about it!
Thanks
Then uninstall it and use WordPad which comes free with Windows - it will (almost) certainly provide everything you need for writing the odd letter...

You might also consider investing in a beginner's guide to the operating system on your laptop - you have, after all, paid for it...
