Cripes CF you 're not sitting next to me are you that was quick.I know that it's the normal way but recently the ones next to my selection have highlighted as well, also if I want to select a block of pictures. I sometimes get a row across or a file down, and not the whole block. Thanks for your quick reply!!
There are 3 main ways of selecting multiple items.

Holding down ctrl will let you click on random items and will select each one you click on, no others.

Holding down shift lets you select a range of items by clicking on the first item and then on the second item then all items in between the two you click on will also be selected

You can also "draw" a square around a selection of items by holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse so it draws a square, all items inside the square are selected. (I suspect this is what you are doing by mistake to select the ones adjacent to the items your trying to select)
