quick mask in photoshop 7 ...why does it make a selection fade?

when i use quick mask I first paint it on in semi trans red then clic on the adjacent button and a selection is made .....however when i copy the selection and paste it into another photo the image is semi transparent.....i want the selected part to be non transparent.... what am I doing wrong
