Can normal DVDs (ie non blu-ray) play on a blu-ray player?

Check the specifications on your player...
I just had a look at some, and the Blu Ray players I looked at.... were backward compatible... as in yes... they would play a conventional DVD disk ...but obviously there will be no increase in display performance.

Most Blu Ray players will in fact play DVDs and a lot will also upscale it as well (ie better quality)

most of the DVD players plays the blue ray DVD.
so it depends the DVD player , may be your DVD player support the blue ray DVD or not.
