My friend wants to buy a wireless box for her laptop but she is an amateur and so am I. How could we go about doing it? Does the box need to be specific to her computer or can any be bought?

All that is important is who supplies her internet - the ISP.

If it is Virgin via cable broadband, she needs DSL

Any other ISP is ADSL. She may be able to get a free router from her ISP.

Also she must make sure her laptop is wifi enabled - all modern laptops are
in theory all wireless kit works with all other wireless kit

in practice sometimes even the same manufacturer's kit won't work together

as ethel says - most (all?) laptops have wireless
are we right in assuming that this "box" is the router which will replace the modem or whatever (the bit the phoneline (or cable) plugs into)
if that's what you mean you can connect more than one laptop to it via wireless

if it's the doofer that plugs in to the lappy - first check the laptop doesn't already have one (give us the make/model if you can't)
