I was wondering if anyone has had PC world repair or update their computer at home? I need someone to come out and look at mine as there are faults on it, had a local person come and look but they didn't really fix it, was wondering if PC would be the next best thing?

Thanks for any answers you're able to give.

Thanks AC, I didn`t realise system restore could slow computer down. I usually reinstall windows if I have any big problems. I reinstalled in April and haven`t stored much since, that`s why I have so much free hard drive. I did system restore back to just after I did reinstall. Something was slowing computer, but wasn`t sure what it was, but it`s fine now.
Can you manually update Norton?

just a minor point
posting your e-mail "straight" could well be picked up by one of the many scanners which regularly trawl bulletin boards.
the usual way is to split your address with something easy for a bod to spot ... but difficult for a bot to spot

it would be a shame to loose such an apt nym
Thanks Ac - but this is a disposable email address. If it gets troublesome I'll ditch it. :) My main email address is my very first motorbike registration - so just odd letters and numbers.

CL - you can either upload your screenshot to tinypic and post the link here:

Or email it to me and I will post it for you. :)

We shall get you sorted.

shame ... it fits well - better than duracellethell ... or batterybertha
it has a carry on sound to it

system restore doesn't slow it down as such ... but the more files on a HDD the bigger the list your system needs to search through ... so .....the (slightly) longer things take
given that so little of your disc is used ... don't worry.

I swiched restore off ages a go ... but I'm comfortable with the consequences ... I'd never recommend anyone to switch a system process off .... if they've not come to that conclusion on their own - it's best left alone.

in this case it really is one rule for me and one for others
My system restore is set at 3%, but every couple of weeks I delete all but the last system restore point, and once a month it gets turned off completely.

I hope CL is getting sorted.

Hi Ethel

At last, I did the screen shot but did not disable my firewall or av as you know I'm having probs with same. Hope this link works, will look forward to hearing what you have to say. Btw... read on some forum not to disable anything through msconfig.... is that sound advice?

The pic works fine - cooking dinner, but will be back.

There is nothing there that screams at me, although there is only half of the processes there. Do you use the MS Works Task Scheduler? Maybe someone else will detect a potential problem there.

I know you don't want to, but I strongly recommend you get rid of Norton and use something else. It is a massive resource hogger and as you are running on 256 mb it will cause you problems.

Another experiment - a simple one.

Create another user account - start - control panel - user accounts - create a new account. Do you have the same problems if you use your pc in the new account?

Hi Ethel

Thanks for that. At the moment I have another darned problem, Norton's detected a virus this afternoon, "downloader", it couldn't access the file nor repair it so hopefully it's put it in quarantine. I have no way of telling as I can't access it since that guy mucked my norton's... so with everyone saying get rid of Norton's which I understand.... what happens if I do and the damned virus is still in it?

classylady,
dont waste your money on these so called registry fixes ,i would still stick with a reputable service to computors
john
log on to " pc home help" try googling it , (i think it might be all one word ),register with them and they will get computer whiz kids in your area to contact you and come out and fix it -they charge 30.00 for the first hour and they are brilliant , i had them out to my old computer until i decided to buy myself a new one for xmas
Hopefully it will take the trojan with it.

:)

Kaspersky is on a free 6 months offer from the PC Advisor cover disc... it's a good (best) solid solution ....

to remove norton - you'll need this
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo .nsf/docid/2005033108162039

buy the mag .... download the remove software
disconnect from internet
remove norton
reboot
install kaspersky
reconnect internet .... update definitions ... scan 'puter

hopefully - sorted
