First, I dont know how to rip dvd to my hard drive. Is the format that it is ripped able to be recorded on to dvd disc. When I d/load a film or such how do i know what format it is and how do I convert the formats. And how do I use nero to burn dvd. I also have Sonic My DVD and DVD Shrink 3.1 which I dont really know how to use. I am perfect at CD's. This has me baffled.
Check you have the right disk. There are different kinds of DVD R disks, called + and - (minus). This one caught me out at first.

re writer is dual format
burning movies to dvd in the correct format is a problem for me too as nero insists on correct formats and wont convert for you.i gave up experimenting and now just dl svcd's which i burn to cd !!! so any help offered to the poster on this subject would also help me too !
Im feel pretty much the same as mattk,I found it too much hassle to burn to DVD and now use VCD & SVCD,the quality is only slightly poorer than DVD,but it is much quicker. The only downside is that I have to split my movies into 600mb files because you can only fit a maximum of 700mb on a CDRW.I do sometimes burn to DVD using NERO, but it takes absolutely hours, and if the movie is an AVI file I have to convert the file format first.I use a program called Cucusoft to convert my movies from AVI to MPG and also to split the movie, but it does take several hours to do,and the result is not always as good as you hope.
In order to copy from a DVD using Nero you will need to add 'Nero Recode' which can be found at the Nero website. Also I had to install a program called 'DVD for free' which runs in the background. You will also need to compress the DVD if you intend to burn it onto a DVD+-R. As they're half the capacity. For more advice go to http://www.afterdawn.com/.
I have never really had any trouble using Nero to 'backup' my DVD's. So really it's just trial and error. you will waste a few disks, but I can now get a film onto a DVDR in about 30 minutes at 60% quality.
