Right-click any spare space on the desktop and select properties. From the window that then appears, select the settings tab and re-adjust the screen resolution with the slider bar.

Thanks dodgyshirt but we can't get the bottom half of the control panel on the desktop! Any more ideas?
Have you tried booting it up in safe mode?
Question Author
It wont go into safe mode. Tried Ctrl and F8, won't respond. Tried using restore disk, won't read that either! Thanks for everyone's help, any more suggestions please?
Why can't you do what dodgyshirt suggests? That doesn't involve opening Control Panel
Question Author
BenDToy, if you read my reply, you will see why!!
speaking as one amateur to another [no disrespect intended] double-click just to the left of the `minimize` box then as dodgyshirt suggests reset resolution to 800x600 in the settings menu.

Many thanks everyone. Managed to get into safe mode even though the mouse refused to work! After messing about in the control panel eventually got to boot up in normal mode. (But i didn't manage to reset the resolution cos the mouse wasn't working. So how do you explain that? Anyway up and running.......for now.
Best of luck!!!!!!! Isn`t modern technology wonderful?
