DVDs sold in different countries can have a region set on them.

Region 1 - USA
Region 2 - Europe

Full list here
http://www.dvdregions.com/

A DVD player sold in the UK will be Region 2, and a DVD disk sold here will be region 2 (some documentaries and so on may be region free).

The are ways of turning a DVD player into a region free box, but you will have to hunt the internet to see if yours can be done.
The other thing you need to consider with DVDs is ones that people make for you at home with their DVD recorder.

Blank DVD disks come in 4 main formats, and not all DVD players play all types.

The four types are:

DVD+ R (plus)
DVD+ RW (plus)

DVD- R (minus)
DVD- RW (minus)

Have a look at the box or documentation that came with your DVD player and see which ones it lists.

You may be lucky and it MAY play all 4 formats,
