i want to put barbed wire around the rear of my garden, is there a law that stops me from doing this

Very probably. Chances are if any intruder hurts themselves because of the barbed wire, they'll be able to sue the pants off you. I haven't seen any (used that way at anyrate) for years.

I thought the maximum height allowed for a fence was 6'6"?
