Can somebody advise me if I place barbed wire (or similar) on top of my trellis fencing to deter intruders, can I be sued by anybody foolish enough to try to climb over?

Hi

I would think so, yes.

My friends did a simialr thing only they used a plastic spikey trim on top of their fence to try to deter cats from coming in their garden. A young boy climbed over the fence while they were on holiday as his football had gone in their garden. He slipped, fell and sustained a nasty cut on his arm from the spikes.

He has put in a claim and its on-going.

As with many legal matters. it is never clear cut (excuse pun).

Some basic advice here:

My thanks to Happyjo and Oneyeedvic, point taken !!
There was a story in the papers a while ago, about a man, whose mother's house had been broken into several times, putting broken glass along the top of the garden wall. The council made him remove it because 'anyone trying to break in to the house may hurt themselves'! You couldn't make it up!
I dont think you can put barbed wire up, but you can get prikka strips which you can put on a fence or wall. They are legal as long as you display the warning sign that comes in the pack.
