Open the program and search the options for one that allows you to show/hide the icon. In XP, if there isn't one you could "always hide" the icon (though it will be visible if you expand the tray) by right-clicking the taskbar and selecting Customize, Hide inactive icons and Customize again.

You can use either CCleaner (Tools - Startup - delete entry) or Startup Inspector for windows (tick - untick entry).
